100 YEARS OF THE CAUCASIAN STATE NATURAL BIOSPHERE RESERVE NAMED AFTER H.G. SHAPOSHNIKOV
Founded in 1924, it is the largest mountain and forest protected area in Europe. It is located within three subjects of the Russian Federation - the Krasnodar Territory, the Republic of Adygea and the Karachay-Cherkess Republic, the administrative center is located in Sochi. The subtropical department of the reserve - yew-boxwood grove is located in the Khostinsky district.
The main goal is to preserve and study the natural course of natural processes, the genetic fund of relict and endemic representatives of fauna and flora, many of which are listed in the Red Book of the Russian Federation. In 1999, the territory of the Caucasian Reserve was included in the List of UNESCO World Heritage Sites under the name «Western Caucasus».
The symbol of the reserve is a wisent. The revival of this animal in this area is the first successful project of global importance to restore a population lost in the wild. It is also home to the Caucasian red deer, brown bear, Caucasian chamois, Central Asian leopard and more than 80 species of animals, about 10,000 species of insects, and over 3,000 species of plants. |
