An unknown number of unsold stamps were recalled and destroyed.

The ink was subject to oxidation, causing the stamps to turn various shades of orange over the years.

The design of the 4 cents Trans-Mississippi stamp was obtained from an engraving by Captain Seth Eastman. Singling Out of engraving was used.
